2008 MARCH 6: DENTON, TEXAS SNOWSTORM
Denton enjoyed an unexpected afternoon of heavy snow, more
than double the forecast for the day. Reports of eight inches within
four hours were common around the city, and schools and businesses closed early.
Traffic conditions deteriorated rapidly when, at
the peak of the storm, Denton ISD sent their students home. Parents clogged the
roads and school buses negotiated the slick surfaces
before TX DOT sanded bridges or intersections. It wasn't a pretty sight.
.
University of North Texas students used the break to frolic
in the unusual conditions. Giant snowmen were a typical project.
Every
few blocks, groups pushed impossibly large snowballs up hills and onto even
larger bases. The most impressive was a few blocks from
my house, a snowman probably eight feet tall with a massive foundation.
Should be interesting to see how soon he melts in the
weekend sun.
